Once, Saul got so close that David was able to sneak up on him in the night and playfully cut the hem off his robe. It seemed like a good joke at the time, but when he saw how ridiculous the king looked the next day, trudging along in little more than his shirt tails, David regretted his humiliating little lark and approached Saul to make an attempt at reconciliation.
âSire, you appear to have lost something,â taunted David, despite his good intentions. He waved a suspiciously familiar piece of frayed fabric.
The king stared at the cloth, and said nothing.
âI knew youâd be one to appreciate a good prank. You see how easily I could have killed you if Iâd wanted toâbut I didnât do it.â
âNo,â Saul admitted, âyou didnât. Thanks so much for showing such noble restraint. I canât thank you enough! What can I possibly do to repay you?â A more sensitive man than David might have noticed the dangerous glitter in the kingâs eye.
âWell, you might stop hunting me down like a dog,â suggested David.
âOf course, my boy! I should have thought of that myself. Consider it done.â
By this time Saul was irritating everyone around him with his paranoid whining; he heard a threat in every footfall and saw a conspirator behind every bush. And this latest bit of tomfoolery, while harmless in itself, hadnât done much to improve matters. Despite his promise, Saul continued to pursue David just as relentlessly as ever. The king was obsessed with the idea that the younger man was a threat to his throne, if not his lifeâand, to be sure, he wasnât far wrong.
